Marriage License

Important Information

• Documents: All documents must be an original and/or certified copy (no photocopies). Our office will keep copies of all documents presented unless required to keep the original/certified copies for our files.
• Birth Certificate Waiver: If a birth certificate cannot be provided, the applicant shall obtain an order signed by a judge waiving the birth certificate requirement.
• Certified Copies: Once completed marriage license copies are received and recorded, anyone may acquire a certified copy for $6 each.
  • Please note that these will not be mailed automatically to applicants.
  • Certified copies are required for name changes associated with driver’s license, social security card, etc.

A. If parties are 18 years old and over:

• Only one party must be present to apply, have a valid driver's license or ID at time of application, and bring all documents required for both parties.
• A state certified birth certificate and a social security card/number must be provided for each party.
• If either party was previously married, they must provide a certified copy of Judgment of Divorce or a certified copy of the former spouse’s Death Certificate.
• Persons born in another country, see item “C” below.
• The Clerk’s office keeps a copy of all documents presented to attach to our copy of the marriage application and will return original documents presented.

B. If parties are 16 - 17 years old:

• Both parties must be present to apply for and sign the application.
• A state certified birth certificate, social security card/number, and valid driver’s license or ID must be provided for each party.
• Parental Consent: Parents of minors must sign a consent form:
  • If parents of minor are married, both must sign consent form.
  • If parents are divorced and have joint custody, a certified copy of Custody Order must be presented, and both must sign the consent form.
  • If one parent has full custody, a certified copy of that Custody Order must be presented and that parent must sign the consent form.
  • If legal guardian is other than a parent, a certified copy of Custody Order must be presented, and the guardian must sign the consent form.
• Parties are required to obtain written authorization to marry from the Judge of the court exercising juvenile jurisdiction in the parish in which the minor resides or the ceremony is to be performed.
• Clerk’s office keeps a copy of all documents presented to attach to our copy of the marriage application unless required to keep the original/certified copy.

C. Applicant(s) born outside of the United States:

Applicants who do not have a Social Security Number must present:

1. A valid and unexpired Passport from the country of birth or an unexpired Visa accompanied by a Form I-94 issued by the United States.
2. A certified birth record and a translation sworn by fluent translator accompanied with a sworn notarized statement that it is a true and accurate representation of the original birth record.

The clerk’s office keeps a copy of all documents presented to attach to our copy of the marriage application unless required to keep the original/certified copy.

D. Covenant Marriage:

• Requires the same information stated above in addition to premarital counseling.
• Applicants wanting to obtain a Covenant Marriage must submit a Declaration of Intent and Affidavit and Attestation.
